What should I expect from an appointment at LAC?

What should I expect from an appointment at LAC? Great question! If you’re a little apprehensive about your upcoming appointment or unsure of what to expect, we’re here to put your mind at ease! With the help of our clinic dog, Juno, we’ll break down what an appointment at LAC is likely to look like.

Arriving at LAC

When you arrive at the clinic, use the intercom for ‘Leeds Audiology Clinic’ and one of our friendly team on reception will buzz you in.

In reception, you’ll be greeted and checked in by one of our friendly team. If you’re attending for a hearing test, hearing aid fitting or consultation, you’ll be asked to take a seat. Sit back, relax and wait for your audiologist to come through and take you to the clinic room.

If you’re visiting for ear wax removal or ear impressions, you’ll be asked to fill in a brief consent form while you wait for your audiologist. The form will ask some questions about your ears and hearing. This will give the audiologist some background information before your assessment.

The Clinic Room

When our audiologist is ready, they’ll come through to reception to greet you. You will be shown into one of two clinic rooms next to reception, depending on the type of appointment you require.

Hearing Test & Hearing Aid Consultation Appointment at LAC

If you’re visiting for a hearing test, you’ll be shown into the right hand clinic room. Our audiologist will take some details from you and have a chat about your hearing difficulties, medical background and lifestyle. Our audiologist will also then check your ears. Once this initial assessment is over, your hearing test can begin.

You will then be shown to the soundproof booth and fitted with a pair of headphones. Every time you hear a sound, you press a button. The test is painless and usually lasts around fifteen minutes or so.

Once the test has finished, our audiologist will explain the results to you and discuss the next steps. If hearing aids are something that you require and are interested in, they will go through the various options and answer any questions you may have. A full hearing test and hearing aid consultation can take anywhere from thirty to ninety minutes depending on the client’s needs.

Finding out that you have a hearing loss can be a surprise. It’s important to take some time to think about your options and what you would like to do next.

We offer a two-week hearing aid trial that allows you to take a pair of hearing aids away and try them in your day-to-day life. For more information about this and for prices, you can contact the clinic here.

Consultation & Ear Wax Removal Appointment at LAC

If you’re visiting for a consultation or ear wax removal, you may be shown into either of our clinic rooms. Our audiologist will have looked over your consent form and may ask you some follow up questions about your ears.

They’ll start by checking both of your ears with a video-otoscope. This means, if you’re brave enough, you can look inside your ears on screen. Our audiologist will identify if you have a wax build up or not. For a wax build up, they’ll use micro suction or irrigation (sometimes both) to clear your ears.

If you do not have a wax build up, a test called tympanometry will be performed to check for middle ear fluid. Advice will be given and our audiologist may refer you to your GP.

Micro Suction

This method involves a small suction tube and probe to gently remove the wax. This tends to be the preferred method as it carries less risk of infection. However, micro suction is not suitable for everyone which is why an initial assessment is important. If the wax is too soft or stuck to the eardrum, irrigation would be the best method for removal.

Irrigation

This method involves a small tube that gently pumps warm water in the ears to dislodge and remove the wax. It’s important that the wax is soft for irrigation and that the ears are kept dry for a couple of days afterwards to reduce the risk of infection. In some cases, irrigation is not recommended for example if you have an ear infection or perforated ear drum.

Both methods of wax removal take around fifteen to thirty minutes in total. The procedure should be painless but may be a little uncomfortable and noisy. If the wax is particularly stubborn, you may be invited back for a free follow up appointment.

End of your appointment at LAC

At the end of your appointment, our audiologist will give you any advice that you need and answer any questions you may have. You will then be brought back through to reception to see one of our team for payment.
